beyond the game

Beyond the Game: Nurturing Strong Minds for Sustainable High Performance

Presented by NW Resiliency Project

High school sports can shape lives, but what happens beyond the game? This one-of-a-kind program was designed to support the whole athlete: physically, mentally, and emotionally. Whether you're a coach, parent, or student-athlete, Beyond the Game helps your team develop strength that lasts long after the scoreboard clears.

Who It's For:

  • High School Coaches & Athletic Staff
  • Student-Athletes across all sports
  • Parents & Caregivers of Student-Athletes

What We Do:

Beyond the Game bridges the gap between performance and well-being. Through a two-part seasonal program, we guide teams in cultivating a healthy culture — rooted in communication, accountability, and resilience.

Our process begins with listening — understanding your current team dynamics, challenges, and opportunities. Then we build a customized experience to transform your team culture from the inside out.

Program Includes:

Phase 1: Listening & Learning

  • Private 1:1 coach meetings
  • A team-wide learning session
  • Customized recommendations with actionable insights

Phase 2: Weekly Sessions During Season

  • Small-group, scenario-based discussions
  • Team-building through real-life challenges
  • Separate tracks for Coaches and Athletes

Expert Speaker Sessions

  • Coaches: Mental health, sustainable leadership, athlete perspective
  • Athletes: Identity, balance, peer support
  • Parents: Communication, mental well-being, meaningful involvement

Weekly Themes We Explore

  • Core Values & Team Identity
  • Accountability & Peer Influence
  • Role of Every Player — including Scout Team
  • Real-Life Scenario Challenges
  • Mental Resilience & Stress Management

Parent Engagement

Each session wraps with take-home debriefs to empower family conversations and keep athletes connected to a trusted adult, both on and off the field.

Why It Works

We don’t bring a one-size-fits-all playbook. Every team is unique, and our strength is in co-creating a culture where:

  • Coaches lead with empathy and clarity
  • Athletes show up as leaders on and off the field
  • Parents stay informed and involved in a meaningful way

Our approach blends sports psychology, lived experience, and leadership coaching, all grounded in mental health and resilience-building.

Ready to Bring Beyond the Game to Your School or Community?

Whether you’re a coach, parent, or school admin — we’d love to connect.

State of Mind: A Peer Support Program for Students

Empowering Teens to Support Each Other — One Conversation at a Time

State of Mind is NW Resiliency Project’s peer-led mental health initiative designed specifically for high school students. Built on the belief that youth are uniquely positioned to support one another, this program creates safe spaces where students can openly discuss challenges, share experiences, and develop resilience — together.

What Is State of Mind?

State of Mind trains and equips student leaders to serve as peer supporters — not therapists, but trusted allies who are trained to listen, offer empathy, and help classmates navigate life’s tough moments. These groups meet regularly and are supported by a mental health professional and school staff member to ensure safety and guidance.

Our goal is simple: foster a school culture where no student feels alone.

Why Peer Support Works

Research shows that young people often turn to each other first when struggling with stress, anxiety, or depression. State of Mind harnesses that instinct and turns it into a structured, safe, and supportive system.

According to Mental Health America, peer wellness programs:

  • Normalize mental health conversations among youth
  • Increase feelings of connection and belonging
  • Empower students to advocate for themselves and others
  • Bridge the gap between struggling in silence and reaching out for help

State of Mind doesn’t replace professional mental health care, it complements it. By building peer-led systems of trust and support, we strengthen a school’s overall mental wellness ecosystem.

Key Program Elements

  • Peer Mentor Training: Students are trained in active listening, empathy, boundaries, and resource awareness.
  • Weekly or Biweekly Check-ins: Peer support groups meet regularly to create consistency and trust.
  • Trusted Adult Involvement: School staff and mental health professionals are always present in the background to ensure safety and oversight.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Students help lead mental health awareness initiatives throughout the school year.

Coming Summer 2025: QPR Suicide Prevention Training

Empowering Communities to Recognize and Respond to Suicide Risks

Starting this June, NW Resiliency Project is proud to offer QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Suicide Prevention Training facilitated by one of our certified co-founders. This evidence-based program is designed to equip individuals with the skills to identify warning signs of suicide, engage in supportive conversations, and connect those at risk with appropriate resources.

What is QPR?

QPR stands for:

  • Question: Learn how to ask someone if they are thinking about suicide.
  • Persuade: Understand how to encourage them to seek help.
  • Refer: Know how to guide them to the appropriate support services.

Much like CPR is for physical health emergencies, QPR is a critical intervention for mental health crises, aiming to prevent suicide through early recognition and response.

Who Should Attend?

This training is ideal for:

  • Educators and School Staff
  • Parents and Caregivers
  • Coaches and Youth Leaders
  • Community Members and Volunteers
  • Organizational Teams and Employers

No prior mental health training is required—just a commitment to making a difference.

Mental Health resources & readiness assessment

Empowering Schools and Communities to Strengthen Mental Health Support Systems

Developed by NWRP Co-Founder Allison Dyer

What Is It?

The Mental Health Resource & Readiness Assessment is a strategic tool designed to help schools, districts, and community organizations evaluate and enhance their mental health support systems. By assessing current resources, identifying gaps, and highlighting areas for growth, this tool facilitates the development of comprehensive, responsive, and sustainable mental health strategies.

Purpose & Goals

  • Assess Current Capabilities: Understand the existing mental health resources and services within your institution.
  • Identify Gaps and Opportunities: Pinpoint areas lacking adequate support and recognize opportunities for improvement.
  • Guide Strategic Planning: Inform the development of targeted initiatives and policies to bolster mental health support.
  • Promote Continuous Improvement: Establish a baseline for ongoing evaluation and enhancement of mental health services.

How It Works

The assessment encompasses key domains critical to a robust mental health support system:

  1. Awareness & Education: Evaluates the extent of mental health literacy and stigma reduction efforts.
  2. Prevention Programs: Assesses the availability and effectiveness of proactive mental health initiatives.
  3. Early Intervention Services: Reviews mechanisms for identifying and supporting individuals at risk.
  4. Crisis Management & Support: Examines protocols and resources for responding to mental health crises.
  5. Treatment & Therapy Options: Looks into access to professional mental health services.
  6. Community Engagement: Considers the involvement of families and community partners in mental health efforts.
  7. Funding & Resource Allocation: Analyzes the investment in mental health resources and programs.
  8. Oversight & Governance: Evaluates leadership structures and accountability measures.
  9. Training & Development: Reviews professional development opportunities related to mental health.
  10. Integration with Educational Systems: Assesses how mental health initiatives are embedded within the educational framework.
  11. Monitoring & Evaluation: Looks at the processes for assessing the effectiveness of mental health programs.

Each domain is rated across five levels of readiness:

  • Level 1: Emerging – Minimal awareness or resources.
  • Level 2: Mobilizing – Initial steps taken; foundational structures in place.
  • Level 3: Strengthening – Established programs with growing effectiveness.
  • Level 4: Thriving – Comprehensive and integrated mental health support.
  • Level 5: Transforming – Innovative practices leading to systemic change.

Why It Matters

Implementing this assessment enables institutions to:

  • Gain Clarity: Understand the current state of mental health support.
  • Drive Improvement: Make informed decisions to enhance services and programs.
  • Foster Collaboration: Engage stakeholders in a shared mission to support mental well-being.
  • Ensure Accountability: Monitor progress and maintain focus on continuous improvement.
